Bedroom according to Traditional Feng Shui

Change as much as you can about your bedroom furnishings, wall color and accessories, keeping in mind that this room is only about passion, rest and self-nurturing. Try to get a good balance of the five elements as well as honoring the shapes and colors of the house your bedroom falls within. If you are looking for a major change, then stretch yourself and make major decor changes within the bedroom. In other words, don't buy the same old comfort zone stuff that will get you into the same old love- and health-life situations!

Feng shui rules and tips for best possible bedroom.

  • Use Muted, Soothing Colors In Your Bedroom.
  • It is recommended that your bedroom not be located below a second floor bathroom. If possible, have your bedroom towards the back of the house. Shut the door to any attached bathroom. Keep your bedroom neat and tidy and uncluttered.
  • Don't Place Your Bed Under A Window .
  • Make sure your bed has a direct view of the door. Your mattress should be at least 18 inches above the floor. Don't store things under your bed. Have space on either side of your bed. Have a solid headboard for your bed. If you divorce, buy a new mattress and headboard.
  • Feng Shui experts say that a king size bed is not a good choice for a couple. However, the Better Sleep Council recommends that couples choose a queen or king size mattress that will give you both enough room for easy, free movement while you sleep.
  • Keep Water Scenes, Aquariums Or Fountains Out of your bedroom.
  • Don't place flowers or plants in your bedroom. Make sure you don't have a mirror that reflects the two of you in bed. Don't sleep under a ceiling fan.
  • Keep Lighting Soft And Low. Candles help make your bedroom more relaxing. Don't have a lot of pictures of your children and family in your bedroom. Televisions and computers in bedrooms are not recommended. If you have to have one in your bedroom, put it in an armoire, so you can shut the door on it when it is not in use.
  • The Bed Should Be Comfortable and the energy should flow smoothly throughout the room.
  • Do Not Have Anything Under The Bed , so that energy can circulate properly.
  • The Bedroom Should Be Painted A Soft Color that suits your energy. A bedroom should never be painted red.
  • Fresh Air Should Always Be Circulating through your bedroom.
  • Ceiling Fans Should Not Be Placed directly over your bed.
  • Your Bedroom Should Never Have A Mirror That Faces the bed, as it interferes with restful sleep. Mirrors should not be placed behind your bed, at your feet or by the side of the bed.
  • Buy A Wooden Bed if you have the choice. Metal beds can conduct electricity, which can be a health concern. Try not to place anything electrical near your bed, and do not use electric blankets (even if they are plugged in but not turned on they can be harmful!), heating pads or massage pads.
  • Check the lighting level to see if it is not too harsh (yang) or too dim (yin). Listen for distracting sounds and try to alleviate or remove them.
  • Avoid Large Living Plants in the bedroom.
  • Avoid Large Mirrors in the room if you are not sleeping well.
  • Avoid Sharp Metal within the bedroom.
  • Create A Headboard For The Bed And Place It Against the most solid wall in the room. If your bed is in line with a doorway, hang a crystal between the bed and that area.

Bedroom in Traditional Feng Shui. Article by Lori Wilson

Our bedrooms are our sanctuaries. They are places to recharge our batteries, escape from the outside world and even indulge ourselves. But in every home, each bedroom is used for different reasons and by different people, therefore they should be decorated and organized accordingly.

To ensure everyone in your household gets the most out of their individual space, take a Feng Shui approach to organizing each room. Internationally recognized Feng Shui expert Terah Kathryn Collins details how each room should be set up in order to achieve it's maximum potential in her book "Feng Shui A-Z." Here are some of her tips.

    GENERAL RULE OF THUMB

  • All bedrooms should be at the back of the house where it is considered more serene.
  • Remove all excess items such as exercise equipment, desks, computers or other "active" furniture. If you must have these items in your room, place them far from your bed and cover them up when not in use.
  • Situate the bed with a view of the door without it being directly in front of it, as this puts you in a peaceful flow of the room. The bed should also not be placed directly under a window as they cause drafts and cause uneasiness.
  • Choose comfortable furniture and avoid anything with sharp edges that could be dangerous.
  • Clear out everything under your bed, as the Ch'i of things underneath you will affect you all night long.
  • A ROMANTIC MASTER BEDROOM

  • The master bedroom can often be quite large, but that doesn't mean it has to be cold and cavernous. Make this room warm and romantic. This can be achieved by creating more than one cozy corner in the room.
  • Utilize all your senses by choosing warm colors, romantic music, sensuous sheets and scented candles.
  • In order to keep you and your partner in the mood, remove all photos of your kids and family, or at least keep them out of view from your bed.
  • Place spacious and attractive nightstands next to each side of the bed.
  • A PEACEFUL CHILD'S BEDROOM

  • Take those family photos out of your room and put them in your child's as they tend to make kids feel secure and watched over.
  • To ensure your kids calm and ready for bed, decorate with tranquil warm pastel colors instead of bright reds, blues and yellows. Also, put the action figures away at night.
  • If your kids aren't sleeping well, try covering up any mirrors in the room while they sleep, as mirrors keep a room "awake."
  • If your kids share a room, designate a specific spot for each child such as a closet, table or shelf. This will help define each child's Ch'i and teach respect for other people's things.
  • AN INVITING SINGLE WOMAN'S BEDROOM

  • Get rid of stuffed animals, dolls and excessive pillows. These items send the message to prospective overnight guests that the bed is already taken. Theses items also restrict free and spontaneous movement.
  • Replace any art that represents solitary, companionless objects with art that portrays pairs, such as two people, two flowers and the like.
  • Place pairs of candlesticks, vases and books in the far right corner of your bedroom which is the Love and Marriage area of any space.
  • Decorate as if you already have someone to share your bed with by putting nightstands and lamps on both sides of the bed.
  • A COMFORTABLE GUEST ROOM

  • Make this room as comfy, cozy and beautiful as the rest of your house.
  • Leave the door open, "visit" the room often and open the windows.
  • Don't let it become a junk room by dumping all your stuff fin there and clearing it out only when you have company.
